استخر نام شهری باستانی است واقع در استان فارس ایران. املای تاریخی آن اصطخر است.
استخر بزرگ‌ترين شهر در دردوران خود بوده و به گفته تاريخ نويسان چهاردروازه داشته كه درحال حاضر یک از آنها در سر پيچ دوراهی مرودشت ارسنجان و ديگری در جنوب شهر مرودشت قرار داشته است.
در هفت کیلومتری ویرانه‌های تخت جمشید، ویرانه‌های شهر استخر معروف به «تخت طاووس» قرار دارد. آثار بجامانده از این شهر شامل دروازه سنگی، ستون‌ها و دیواره‌های سنگی است که به روزگار هخامنشی تعلق دارد. در این شهر، بازمانده سازه‌های اسلامی، ساسانی و اشکانی و ظروف و آثار سده‌های آغازین هجری در آن کشف شده است. آب شهر استخر از رود سیوند تامین می شده است.
Estakhr (in Persian: استخر), was an ancient city located in southern Iran, in Fars province, five kilometers north of Persepolis. It was a prospering city during the time of Achaemenid Persia.
At first, Estakhr was an Achaemenid city in present-day Fârs Province, Iran. The city contained the original Avesta, before it was burned by Alexander of Macedonia, followed by the decline of the Achaemenid Emipire of Persia. Estakhr temporarily became the capital of Sassanian Persia during the reign of Ardashir I before moving to Ctesiphon. Estakhr was burned to the ground during the Islamic conquest of Persia by Arab muslims invaders[citation needed]. After being rebuilt, the city lost its importance to the city of Shiraz. Today only an archaeological site remains.
